Who and How to Participate

This is advanced content designed for experienced coaches.

While coaches may opt to register for only the training strand or the community of practice series, the two strands are designed to support one another, and so the optimal experience would include both.

Program leaders who oversee coaching are encouraged to participate in the management strand. This strand is designed for: supervisors with responsibility for overseeing coaching, coaching program coordinators, directors of professional development, and quality managers. The manager strand content complements the coach strand content and will help build a common vocabulary and understanding across a coaching program.

All sessions will be live, interactive, and broadcast through Zoom. Recordings of training sessions (but not Communities of Practice) will be available within a day of broadcast.

Expert Faculty

The Coaching Series will be led by three early childhood veterans with deep experience in coaching and program leadership:

Camille Mays

Camille has led the curriculum development and training for coaches across California, through WestEd. She led the creation of the First 5 California’s Early Learning and Care Coaching Framework, and oversaw and managed coaching leadership teams for the Train-the-Facilitator curriculum. She served as lead writer, content creator, and facilitator for California’s ECE Competencies for Adult Learning and Coaching Course. She created statewide coaching webinars, created protocols, and facilitated statewide CoP sessions.

Janet Humphryes

Janet led the design for the University of Colorado Denver’s pioneering Early Childhood Coaching Certificate Program in 2010, which has graduated hundreds of students around the country. She has served as a national Head Start Technical Assistance Specialist, Early Childhood Program Director and Educator, and adjunct faculty member—along with her published works, speaking engagements, and founding role in the Colorado Coaching Consortium.

Amy Ogilvie

Amy Ogilvie serves as a Data Coach and Curriculum Lead for Early Intel. She previously served as Division Manager for Children and Family Services for the City of Longmont, Colorado, and served for 18 years as CEO of a community-based Head Start program. A key focus of Amy's work is strengthening coaching systems and the use of data to evaluate coaching effectiveness. She supports organizations in connecting instructional coaching to teacher development, classroom quality, and broader program improvement goals.

Jan 28

Designing Coaching Systems that Work

Effective coaching depends on organizational systems—not individual effort alone. Participants will learn how to build a coordinated coaching infrastructure that includes coach roles, coaching eligibility, caseload management, documentation systems, communication structures, supervision, strengths and needs assessments. Leaders will leave with a framework for creating sustainable coaching systems that support consistency across a program.

Feb 25Program Components that Enable Coaches to Excel

Leading coaches requires different leadership practices than supervising teachers. This session is designed for Education Managers, Education Directors, and coaching supervisors. Participants will examine strategies for emotional self-care, reflective supervision, coaching fidelity, professional growth planning, workload management, performance expectations, and building a culture that supports continuous learning among coaches.

Mar 18Prioritizing the Work: Managing Coach Caseloads and Competing Demands

Coaches often balance multiple responsibilities that compete with dedicated coaching time. Participants will examine strategies for workload analysis, tiered coaching systems, scheduling coaching cycles, managing competing priorities, protecting reflective conversations, and maximizing coaching capacity to reflect our priorities and needs.

Apr 22Measuring Coaching Impact: Methods for Demonstrating Value

Many programs document coaching activities but struggle to demonstrate coaching outcomes. We will explore methods for measuring coaching effectiveness using implementation fidelity, teacher practice change, classroom quality indicators, child outcomes, coaching dashboards, and continuous improvement measures. Participants will develop strategies for communicating coaching impact to leadership and governing bodies.

May 6Beyond Teacher Improvement: Coaching for Program Improvement (Joint session with coaches).

This concluding session will help coaches and leaders aggregate coaching information to identify program-wide trends, inform professional development priorities, support continuous quality improvement, and align coaching with school readiness goals, strategic planning, and organizational improvement efforts.
